Huge numbers trialling for colts at Shark Park was brilliant but only so many can play for the Mighty Tigers! Actually a list was handed to very poor selector BJ, 9 returners including a couple of Bulls, 5 first years, 1 2B Town with a final total of 36 players on the roster. So in reality a shovel load can play a part for the Tigers!
Management was boosted by the addition of former Bull Shark and Colours Premier Kieran Cole (KC), trusty manager Neil Turner, referee coordinator Harry Hewitt (but we still don’t understand how referees can reinterpret our rules). The split with Pirana was tough, we were feeling the heat of going in current champs and warm favourites (Ted eat your heart out, suck it up and just win the World Cup by the way mate).
The team started strong with a couple of 70 plus wins over Zingers and Clutha, Jamie Gallagher 6 tries and the title the modest man didn’t love ‘Superstar’, thoroughly deserved Bulls promotion a little later (only club player to win 2 titles).
Division Two had 7 teams (Pirates folded late) and was a useful competition but the bye, some defaults and weather loss disrupted the continuity, and there seemed to be an extra long lay off after exams. We had some more tough games on the way, test day v Kaik looked very dodgy, 5 players with 20 minutes to go but boys dug deep and had a good 28-10 win.
The big series was the 3 match ups with the Hammerheads. Awesome for our club to have 2 teams in the div. First clash we exploded early, dream result 3 tries in 5 minutes, Heads just took a while to awaken, the rest of the game was closely contested. Game two was our first back after the break and the form was reversed, Heads played strong and hard for territory, we worked back into the game but made crucial errors and the Tigers experienced defeat. One all.
Weather was a shocker for semi v A-U but the boys showed real grit and closed the game out 27-5, Noah’s ‘kick-pass’ to second five from a lineout was a classic and this win set up the ‘internal’ final v HH. This was a great game and we can be proud of all players on both squads, a classic war of attrition, nothing held back, very difficult to set up any scoring opportunities. The ‘Tiger Storm’, was a bit of a wild card but most tactics are hatched at the Scullery (aka Alehouse) after midnight! Thirteen players rushed on to sub after 20 minutes and it was during this period that all 8 beautiful points were scored (magnificent try Hamish White).
Brett ‘Crusher’ Crossan led the team very well, his no nonsense play from no8 always effective, Noah McErlane had an excellent season at half-back, his running was extra potent, Hayden Finlayson ran the backs well. New lads all contributed well, especially Sammy ‘on-fire’ Reynolds and Jacob Sterling. Jon Thom the ‘quiet assassin’ just owned the propping business every game and Fossie at hooker was ultra consistent. Everyone contributed to the team atmosphere and performance, great bunch of young men. I hope they all keep playing the game for our club!
Go the Mighty Tigers.

New Year, new team and the Tigers were back big time in 09. Congratulations to all the players, who ended up gelling well as a team on and off the paddock, and who clearly had played a bit of code prior to joining the best footy club on earth.
First phase was about the behind scenes work from Kevy, Grant & Chook, recruiting and fundraising these men set the scene for success, and enjoyment. Numbers and talent trialling looked good and we were rapt when several smart young blokes said ‘just put me in the Tigers’.
Colts 2 had a slightly disappointing 6 teams and the first round was about giving all squad members a go (38 players were on the books in all). Often a fresh backline was run out second half, the team loved to score tries but also for the entertainment of watching Dents attempt to add the bonus! Shanked a couple from the same spot v AU, we settled for a draw but won the rest of the first round reasonable comfortably.
With the courts session and plenty of bonding in the club behind us we climbed into the second round and the team demonstrated they had plenty of heart as well as footy talent. Test day v Southern was a real dig deep, massive second half, Marc Lambert the marauding ginga took no prisoners. Pirates match is world famous at Kettle for Struies offensive bomb, from a tap, back to oppo with Tigers swarming to secure the kick and score under the bar. Magnifique and well worthy of a keg!
Our next match v AU was a massive shock to us all, with our hard-working lockage James Gourlay suffering a very serious spinal injury, out of no-where from a pick and go drive. From the first moment James faced his situation in a positive and determined manner. James got back home to Arrowtown for a week in early October from the Burwood Spinal Unit. Piranha took a group up to celebrate James 19 birthday late August. James is a great guy and we wish him all the very best with his continued steady recovery. Massively looking forward to you walking through those swing doors and having a few quiets with us next year James! The boys fired up and nailed AU 7 tries to 2, we fluked 1 conversion.
Van trip and Friday night footy under lights at Clutha was a top trip, times are hard so only half the field was lit up, 8 dope smokers inhaling would create more light but what the heck, same for both teams. And keep the reff local, good for a wind up. Far from easy but a meritorious 20-5 win followed by the best feed ever, boat races and a noisy drive home (full moons for the Otago NPC bus).
Next week we played Clutha again in the semi, they were blinded by the light, and we hit form and stormed home 57-5. Green boots was let loose with 15 to go and the call went out –he scores and keg for the team. Play cunningly worked to right wing, oppo drawn, nice float pass and boots butchers his chance. Beauty saved a keg!
The final v Southern was a shock, serious stuff now, we can only name and play 22. Bit tough on a few of our lads but the A team went out and they just did us all so proud. Commanding 61-0 victory and all 22 played a part. We played our very best game in the final. It was great to have a good collection of parents and club members supporting. Nice rafter dive to celebrate later Noah and Speedy!
Perhaps the following Sunday was just a little too super, but the trophy was in the cabinet and port dribbling down some chins! Thanks lads.
special mentions go to Shane Brody, Stevie Ross 4 season Tigers. Hamish Foster hooked all day, everyday. Those Baker boys – follow me Captain Rhys and the apprentice Cam, with fellow locals Dents and Tai contributed heaps. Best footballer (and maybe colts half) Luke Stephenson. Great locking pair Chris Alsweiler (top rugby school that James Hargest) and smash n grind Marc Lambert. Two great 8’s, both worth 16 Brett Crossan and Matt Goulding. Will Buchanan stop tackling anything that moves head first. Sewelly you scored that try. Jack Crowley try scoring machine, Noah, Ben and Hamish pace a plenty at the back, Aaron, Steve & Logan all had good moments in the middle (and 1 at prop) . Struan kicked on to grab the spot (and keg). Fearsome, loads of potential Tipene. The rest all gave it heaps and helped to make the season what it was, a rippa. We hope you all return to play for Dunedin next year lads.
Thanks to my co coach Piranha, manager Neil’s, Sam Brassell for his medical assistance, Sam Anderson-Heather and Pies who assisted with some training, and our top supporter Burbs. And thanks to Muzza our mystery Middle Eastern sponsor, keep earning heaps brother! Wild pig fresh killed by Jeremy Jenkins, to die for in the shed after 4 hours on the roast.
Keep safe, rest up this off season and good luck on the punt, cop you all in the New Year.
