It’s not too often that 2BTown has been able to front at the Club prize giving having won its grade, but 2010 is one of those years. We certainly benefited with the splitting of the competition during the year- not just from the results perspective but also from playing enjoyable rugby and having teams at a comparable level playing for the right reason- enjoyment!!
Compared to previous years, 2BTOWN saw the return of some stalwart members who not only increased the experience levels but certainly increased the average playing age- Chris McLaughlan, Paddy Bleach, BJ Edh…… With the ABCD (Archie 1+ yrs, Barry old, Chris 40+ yrs and Denis 30+yrs) of the McLaughlan family, 2BTOWN has spanned the generations. Another family connection has been that of the Eathorne – on some occasions providing the entire front row. We also had some new additions to the executive team with John Flemming and Sav who have provided much appreciate support to the team. Another added addition this year was the meat raffles which have helped to contribute to the teams drinking fund.
In typical fashion though, the team numbers ranged from 30 to less than 15 per game, with some great assistance from the Colts and Prem II’s to bolster the numbers as required. Again the team had a very multi cultural mix made up of English, Scottish, Irish, Welsh (ring ins over the test weekend), Americans, Samoans, & Canadians just to mention a few.
Some of the highlights of the season have been:
Started with a pre season trip to Middlemarch, where we used the colts to bolster our numbers. A common theme throughout the season with our bus trips was although we lost the games we won the boat races!!!
Trip to Kaitangata …………
We had a few beers at their club room, won the boat races, then we moved onto the Pub for a few more, lost the pool games to the big chested ladies team who were not very good at the long shots but the boys enjoyed watching them try and play the shot, we then ended up at the town hall where there was a dance and $5 big bottles!!! Although we lost the rugby and the People’s Trophy we won the People’s Trophy back when we beat Crescent at Shark Park.
The section was split after the first few games and we ended up playing 11 games which we won 9, drew 1, and lost 1. We scored 369 points with 193 against. We scored 58 tries with an average of 5 tries per game.

2008 Season
It’s been a mixed season for 2BTOWN and we finished further down the table than would have been expected if our performance against the tops sides was anything to go by. We seemed to lift our game for the top teams and were unlucky not to upset West Taieri and Taieri. Unfortunately we also dropped our performance when we played the lesser sides and had some disappointing losses to sides that we should have beaten. Our focus has
always been to have fun, play a good game of clean football and enjoy the social aspects that the game offers- all facets of our season that we excelled at during the year. Although we had over 40 players on the squad list we still struggled to field teams on a couple of occasions, however morale is high and we should see a solid core returning next year.
Some of the highlights of the season were the typical performance on the wing from Ger Hanning; the appearance on the field of the Hansen clan-Albert, Ross, Rory and cousin James during one game; the beers and roasts in the “man-cave”; the injury, and end of season, of our star mid-fielder at a post after match function; Rory, ever the bean counter, presenting a pen out of his pocket halfway through a game; and, who could forget that
6’4″ 120kg Harbour centre being “intimidated” by our own little Hamish and thumping him- followed by a well deserved 8 week rest, compliments of the Union.
All in all though another successful fun season and a worthy contribution
to the Dunedin club by the reknown 2BTOWN.
