2009 was always going to be a hard act to follow. Very few teams in the last few years have won back-to-back championships and we always knew it was going to be a big ask, but to the player’s credit, despite the adversity we faced during the season, they never gave up trying.  Injuries are part of the game, but this year we had about 3 seasons worth in one go. We lost three players before we played our 1st competition game then lost our captain Sam Anderson Heather who got a season-ending injury in the second game then our next Captain Keith Cameron lasted a few more games till he dislocated his shoulder.  Many of the other squad members sustained serious injuries during the season also. Throughout the season we had to call on many of the Mako colts and Prem II players to enable us to field a team and all of them showed that they could foot it in Premier I grade rugby which will stand the club in good stead for future years.

The season itself produced some highlights and a few heartbreaks. First game, on Carisbrook we scored 88 points and won the Dunedin City Ford Country Cup was the highlight of the early season. Going to Bathgate Park and retaining the Ron Reggett Memorial Trophy and giving Harbour a good old fashioned hiding at their place were a couple of the others.  The 2-point loss to Alhambra in the second round, the seesaw game that we contrived to loose against Kaikorai and the injury time loss to University were heartbreakers. Throughout the season we recorded good wins against Zingari (twice), Harbour (twice) Green Island, Southern, Alhambra and Taieri. The competition (other than University) was very close and if we had won 2 of those 3 games we would have gotten a semi-final and who knows what would have happened from there. But it wasn’t to be and we finished in the middle of the table.

One of the major highlights for any Premier player is the playing of 50 Premier 1 games and earning the coveted DRFC blazer. This year 3 players achieved this milestone. Michael Walding, Josh Hamilton and Andrew “Pies” Mackintosh all staunch Sharks, very good rugby players and good blokes were awarded theirs at ceremonies throughout the season.

This years Premier 1 team included 13 new faces from the previous years one which provided a blend of experience and new blood and provided plenty of competition for starting places in the team. After a stuttery first round where we lost to Alhambra and University, drew with Southern, had a scratchy win over Green Island and a good one over Pirates we were left languishing in the middle of the table.

Despite the lack of a reliable goal kicker (average goal-kicking success about 50% over the season) the second round proved to be much more fruitful as the team became more settled and more familiar with each other. Due to the nature of the competition we climbed up to as high as second on the table at one point and dropped back to 4th the next week. The second round was extremely close as the 5 top teams struggled to gain some sort of ascendancy in the competition. At the end of the round-robin competition we had recorded wins over Kaikorai, Pirates and Green Island again, Southern, Zingari and Taieri and were in 4th place.

After a comprehensive quarterfinal victory over Harbour we faced Pirates (whom we had beaten twice already during the season) in the semi-final. A game day illness to 1st 5/8 Shaan Davis mean we had to rejig the backline with usual fullback Josh Hamilton moving to 1st 5/8 and Robbie Smith coming off the bench and moving into the unaccustomed role of fullback. Despite these setbacks we managed to outplay Pirates and won 21-7.

This set us up for a final with traditional rivals Southern on Carisbrook. With a Michael Gurran try and two Robbie Smith penalties we lead 11-3 at halftime. Southern surged back into contention with a converted try mid-way through the second half to make the score 11-10. A torrid last 15 minutes say Dunedin hang onto the ball for long periods of time and never move it far from the forwards. At the final whistle an exuberant Dunedin side had hung on to win the Premiership.

Once again the Premier team performed creditably throughout the season. They began the season by defeating last year’s champions, Southern, and finished the season by losing the final on Carisbrook. The draw did not favour the team at times but when it came to important matches this team had the resolve, the skills and the motivation to succeed. The win/loss record of this team has been well documented but that alone does not show the true spirit which this team generated. It is a credit to the coaching staff, in particular Ed Baker, that this team was able to be moulded into a well-drilled unit. As the selection of the Representative Teams shows, this team had an abundance of talented young rugby players with bright rugby futures. In summary 2008 was a highly successful year for the premier team.
